CALLING ALL GENERATION CITIZEN EDUCATORS
JOIN THE MEETUP AND FIND SUPPORT AND RESOURCES FOR TEACHING ACTION CIVICS THIS SEMESTER
PURPOSE
An Action Civics project can be challenging both for the students and the teacher. It requires a lot of planning and preparation by everyone involved and the implemented lessons and activities are often different than those in other classes, presenting new and unique situations. There is also a lot of group work which is beneficial for a number of reasons and can also be challenging to navigate and provide ongoing accountability for every student. Questions arise along the way like, âHow can we engage the students that are unhappy with the chosen focus issue?â âHow can we ensure every single student is engaged all of the time?â âHow can we build studentsâ research skills?â âHow can I move my class forward out of research and into action?â
The good news is that hundreds of teachers have taught tens of thousands of students using GCâs action civics curriculum in the past ten years. And there are always a bunch of teachers – veterans and newbies – doing it each semester! Weâd like to bring them all together to share their questions, successes, innovations, and suggestions with each other. This collective brainpower and experience is sure to contribute to our shared overall goal of empowering young people to be lifelong active citizens and changemakers!
The plan is to gather teachers together virtually at four pivotal moments throughout the semester, with hopes that they will continue the dialogue outside of this space as well. Join us for one or hopefully all four chats!
Both teachers and GC staff identified the following as key points during which teacher support is beneficial:
- Prior to launching into programming to discuss any new or revised curricular materials and begin to plan for the program.
- Around focus issue selection.
- When transitioning into action to support teachers with small group work and project management.
- Post Civics Day to debrief on the experience as a whole.
