In late May, the Generation Citizen Oklahoma community came together for Civics Day to celebrate and honor students across the region engaging in an Actions Civics process around issues in their community they deeply care about. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Earlier in the spring, we held a community conversation with GC supporters on the legacy of the event as we move forward, and this Civics Day felt especially poignant as we lauded the future of our democracy: our students.
This past year has been challenging in multiple ways, and Oklahoma was recently in the spotlight as legislation passed that would distinctly change how civics and history education is handled in the state. Despite these changes, our students gave us hope as we looked to the future and as we celebrated their projects and leadership for the past semester. Our students have engaged in courageous conversations while honing their understanding and skills in civic engagement, and we are confident in their abilities and readiness to support their communities going forward.
